Junior Eurovision

This project, in collaboration with publishers DWB (UK) & LinkinTrax (BE), involved participating in a songwriting camp organized by PBS for Junior Eurovision Malta. I co-wrote and produced two songs: "GRRLZ" by GRRLZ (2nd place) and "Gold" by Andrea Camilleri, working alongside a talented team of international and local collaborators. Both songs were in the national finals, trying for the chance to represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision in Madrid.

Client:
Junior Eurovision Malta

Objective:
Participate in the songwriting camp and collaborate with local Maltese artists to create original songs for their Junior Eurovision Malta artist projects.

The Challenges

Malta, a small island nation, faces unique hurdles in establishing a strong international music presence, making it challenging to secure high-quality entries for their (Junior) Eurovision contests. With limited access to a broader pool of songwriting and production talent, the need for competitive and compelling songs becomes even more pressing.

The Solutions

To overcome these challenges, the Maltese government and national broadcaster PBS organized a songwriting camp, inviting experienced producers and songwriters from across Europe. This initiative aimed to foster collaboration between international talent and local Maltese artists, crafting songs that capture their unique stories and perspectives.

At the camp, we wrote the initial demos for the songs in a single day, capturing the raw energy and authenticity of the junior artists’ stories. After the camp, we continued to collaborate remotely to finalize the production. I worked on refining the songs from my studio, focusing on enhancing their arrangement and overall sound, while the artists and their teams re-recorded their vocals in local studios. These new vocal recordings were then sent back to me, allowing for seamless integration into the final tracks.

By leveraging the strengths of both local and international creators and using a hybrid approach of in-person and remote collaboration, we were able to achieve high-quality productions that maintained the spirit and energy of the original demos.

The Results

Our collaborative efforts led to the creation of two standout songs: “GRRLZ – GRRLZ” (which ended up in second place and won the televotes) and  “Andrea Camilleri – Gold“. Both tracks have been selected for the national finals, competing with 10 other entries on Malta’s national TV. If either song wins, it will go on to represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision in Madrid, offering these young artists an incredible platform to showcase their talents on an international stage.

“Gold” was co-written with Andreas Lindbergh, Maria Cachia Abdilla and artist; Andrea Camilleri.
“GRRLZ” was co-written with Muxu, Leila Borg, Henrik Tala and the girl band members; Rihanna Mifsud, Mia Mifsud, Natalia Xerri and Alaiya Cini.
